Disk space requirement for Web Server
Hello Everyone, What is the usage bandwidth for a typical Koha library catalogue? Is it possible to go over 40 megabytes of disc space (on a Web Server) and over 400 megabytes of traffic per month? We have 1500 items in our catalogue. Thank you. Koha 2.2.9 itself is roughly 4i4 MB unpacked; the MySQL database is 184 MiB for our catalog of roughly 13,000 books and 2,000 patrons. I couldn't tell you how much your DB would use, but it would most likely be roughly 40MiB, and you'd want space to grow. Better to have lots of extra hard drive space now rather than later, and the price is down to roughly a $1 a GB. -- Jesse

Back in the pre-history of library automation (the 1980s), when space was tight and disks expensive, we used to estimate the size of a bibliographic database at 768 bytes per MARC record. I suspect that rounding up to 1 MB/ bib record is probably still a good guess. That's for the generic "title level" description, not including information about all the copies of a title. Don't forget to allow for annual growth, and extra room for abstracts or lengthy notes (e.g. for archival items or rare books), and for local holdings information, especially if you record journal issues. Hi Karina, I have a test Koha-3 here with a similar sized catalogue. My test system's database is around 21 meg, and has.. 2000 bibs 2500 items, (and their indexes) 1000 patrons My Koha-3 system directories appear to use around 90 megs of disk space too. I hope this info helps Cheers, Mason -- Mason James mason.james@liblime.com Programmer www.liblime.com LibLime +64 21 542 117
