Koha and Public Access Computers
I apologize for being slightly off topic, but does anyone on the list know of any free, inexpensive, or open source tools for managing Public Access Computers? Any that work with Koha to validate patrons? We had used Windows SteadyState previously but it won't be developed for Windows 7 so we need to move to something else fairly quickly. Any help would be appreciated! Thanks, Josh Westbrook Prescott Library Mngr/District Technology Mngr Walla Walla County Rural Library District joshw@wwrurallibrary.com http://www.wwrurallibrary.com

there are a _lot_ of tools for managing public computers, but which ones are useful depends on what you are trying to do. do you need the machiens to be windows? or is linux an option? (there are a lot more tools for managing linux systems remotely and in bulk, but there are tools for both) are the machines just web kiosks, or do they need to do other functions? what do you mean when you say 'work with Koha to validate patrons'? do you mean that the login to the box is the same login as to Koha (and when one is suspended the other is as well) David Lang

for web kiosks, i suggest thin terminals like sunrays (*). They are eco-friendly (less than 10W for the sunray2 model), no need for admin, and you can deploy them just like a phone (once the server is installed). Attaching a printer is very simple. We used them since 8 years. I don't understand why i found yet heavy terminals (with windows licences, and often broken) in libraries today, just to use a browser ... my 2 cents... gerard (*) http://photos.sun.com/page/1100
You can try Libki ( http://libki.org ). It's a cross-platform Public Access PC management system I wrote for our library system. It supports single sign-on with Koha. I'm planning a complete rewrite in the near-ish future, but it's totally usable right now. Four of our libraries are using it right now, ranging from very small to decently large. If you were to go with it, I'd be more than happy to attempt to add any missing features you would like. I suspect you mean using SIP2 to check against the Koha database that patrons have accounts in good standing? There are some we know work with Koha - see http://koha.org/documentation/manual/3.2/appendices/sip2-integration http://www.librarica.com/feature_authentication.html http://www.envisionware.com/en/pc_reservation http://www.mcreedjr.com/wp-content/uploads/configure-envisionware-to-use-koh...
