Hi Tim, as mentioned before AllowOnShelfHolds will help some in preventing holds on items on the shelf, but there are some limitations to it. It will not allow holds as long as all items are available on the shelf and also block item level holds on available items. But as soon as one item on a record is checked out, holds are possible. Some of the discussion around this can be found here: Bug 6837 - When AllowOnShelfHolds is OFF then holds on records with available items should not be possible http://bugs.koha-community.org/bugzilla3/show_bug.cgi?id=6837 For finding out about holds that require action from the library, you can check the "holds queue" and "holds to pull" reports on the circulation module start page. And a similar question, what if someone does that? What if someone logs in to the OPAC and puts a hold a book that is not taken out? Does the librarian get an email saying to go quickly snatch that book? Or is the next person who tries to take this book out not allowed to?

We would prefer to not even allow this case. We want to just disallow it.
