Re: [Koha] Put Barcodes in Books Without Barcodes Automatically
Basic question: How do you expect Koha to know which barcode to insert for which item? To make KOHA fully functional, I was planning to print the barcodes of all the books but I noticed that I forgot to put barcodes on it during cataloging. Now, the problem is, it is very tedious if I will manually edit all the items I'd saved just to put barcodes on it. Is there any functionality built-in within KOHA, that query all books with no barcodes and put barcodes automatically on it? If your plan is to automatically assign new barcode numbers to the items, and then print out the barcodes, then you don't need to know in advance what numbers to assign to each item. But, think carefully about the barcode structure you're going to be using so as not to accidentally duplicate numbers if you batch edit the existing records offline and then start assigning new ones automatically. Check the options in Home › Administration › System preferences>Cataloging preferences>Record structure to see what formats are available. For the existing records, one option would be to export the records (with the item information) edit them offline and add sequential numbers to the 952$p field. then import them and overwrite the original records. I know MarcEdit will generate control numbers. I'm not sure if it will create sequential numbers in another field. But I'm sure some technical wizard out there can help figure that out. Just to confirm that MarcEdit will generate sequential numbers in any field also. And it does allow you to have a prefix too if you would like to use something like BK-xxxxx or 2014-xxxxx for your barcodes. You do this in the Tools - Generate Control Numbers menu in MarcEdit Olugbenga Adara Sent from a mobile device. Please excuse typos and brevity.
Thank you for gaving me an idea..anyways, what is control number? What does it do? Can you give some samples. -- View this message in context: http://koha.1045719.n5.nabble.com/Put-Barcodes-in-Books-Without-Barcodes-Aut... Sent from the Koha-general mailing list archive at Nabble.com.
Control number: http://www.loc.gov/marc/bibliographic/bd001.html It's an internally created (by the cataloguing agency) number for the catalogue record. It is not really related to your barcode problem. I just knew that MarcEdit has a generate control number feature. This means it's capable of assigning sequential numbers - and some sort of automatically generated sequential number is probably what you want for your barcodes.
