Koha circ & fine rules based on CCODE instead of item type
Dear Colleagues, I thought that I remember someone stating that Koha's circ and fine rules can be configured using collection codes instead of item types. Have any of you heard that too? My institution wants to circulate new videos for one week instead of three, but if we configure the circ and fine rules using item types, then a patron would not be able to view all of the DVDs by clicking the "DVD" item type search limiter unless they also thought to click the "New DVD" item type limiter. It make more sense to me if the item type reflects the physical manifestation of the item instead of how an item circulates. I hope that example made sense. No, this is not possible.

I agree that this is a disadvantage to the way things work now. -- Owen -- Web Developer Athens County Public Libraries http://www.myacpl.org

That cannot be done right now, but is certaintly a good idea. It would require making collections first-class citizens in Koha, and not just an authorized value, though. Owen and Tomas, Thank you for your feedback. At my library, the Koha item type represents (with one exception) the type of an item- if it's a book, we call it a book regardless to what collection (picture books, young adult, large print, new books) it belongs. To be fair, item types are actually used (from the business-logic POV) as a way to group bibliographic stuff to define rules. We might as well call item types... dunno... 'item sets' (i'm no sure only because I'm not a native english speaker). This is one of the first things I need to teach new users before doing the initial setup. The material type is defined in the MARC headers. So technically, itemtypes are what you are looking for regarding how to define rules for different materials. I'm not closing any door, but it seems to me that it is not a trivial subject for discussion. I hope others weight in and give more points of view. Hi, all-- I have missed having an item's location be a consideration in the loan table--in other systems that I've used, location was a factor in the system calculating whether or not an item could be circulated. In Koha, I think this would mean adding an item record's Shelving Location (MARC field 952 $c) as a criteria to the Circulation and Fine Rules table. In our library, I think this would allow "All" patron categories to not be able to check out items in such locations as Public Reference and Rare, which would be great. As it is now, when I catalog items to these locations, I have to set the MARC field 952 $7 "Not For Loan" field upon cataloging--in OCLC, 952 $7 1. So, Christopher, if this were a feasible solution, could such CCodes as "picture books, young adult, large print, new books," be Shelving Locations (952 $c) and thus possible for a development to add that as a criteria to the Circulation and Fine Rules table? In a multi-branch setting, something like, "North picture books," "South young adult," "West large print," etc.? You can add a tab to the search page to limit by collection code as well as by itype, and change the order of them so that say, ccode comes first. It's in the system preferences. I don't know if that knowledge helps you really, but thought I'd point it out. Cheers, Liz On 31/05/17 10:01, Christopher Davis wrote:

Hi Christopher, maybe something to help with the search problem: You can group multiple item types together so they appear as 'one' on the advanced search page. This feature is using the ITEMTYPECAT authorized value and is set up in administration > itemtypes. Hope this helps, Katrin On 31.05.2017 00:01, Christopher Davis wrote:
