Asking this question for our IT guy: "Has any one tried to put Koha on a virtual machine like Oracle VM VirtualBox or VMWare fusion -- And run it from the desktop of a Mac? I have either a iMac or Xserve Apple Server I could use for this. It appears my server is on its way out and I need to come up with a solution for where I am going to put the next server. We need the server for our elementary school. Library days are only twice a week and all the classes can come through in a few hours. Our demands on the system are small, as Koha is only ever accessed from one computer. Has any one tried a solution like putting Koha in VMware on a Mac? Any feedback would be appreciated." Not sure if it matters for his question, but we have about 5000 items in our library. Thanks, Shelley
We have an instance of Koha running on VMWare. OS is Ubuntu. It is a test system and is used to discover quirks, tweaks, and problems with Koha. We are planning to go live to support Discovery platforms with the OAI-PMH database. Still grappling with issues with the OAI datasets. Greetings, I run a local VirtualBox VM on my Windows 7 machine for development. I would never consider such a thing for production. It is possible? Yes, I would think so. Should you do it? Not on a machine which is being used as a desktop computer, in my opinion. Have you considered an external host provider (such as digitalocean.com)? If your IT guy could set up DNS entries to point to a hosted VM, your small library might be well accommodated by cheaper plans (like digitalocean's $10/month plan). Compare that against the cost of replacement hardware. It's about the same, if not cheaper. Then, follow the package installation instructions at: http://wiki.koha-community.org/wiki/Debian (the recommended OS of preference) (or http://wiki.koha-community.org/wiki/Koha_on_ubuntu_-_packages -- I'm partial to Ubuntu myself) It would be relatively simple to maintain. Plus, you then provide external access at no extra cost, and can likely get any further assistance you need more readily and remotely from one of many Koha support providers. :) Just my take on your situation. I regular use VirtualBox VMs on OS X to run Koha development environments. For a collection of that size, I wouldn't have any qualms about doing a production installation on that sort of setup. I run my dev install on a Macbook Air (1,8 GHz i5 / 8 gig / OS X 10.9.x ) and it runs fine under Virtualbox. It sounds like you would want to look into settings in Virtualbox for ”host-only networking” (if you want to access your virtual server outside of Virtualbox) or ”bridged networking” (if you want other machines in the network to be able to connect. At least that is my understanding after a few quick searches. Even if the proposed solution isn’t the cleanest I’d say it could work fine. But remember to do regular backups of the virtual machine to a separate drive so you don’t lose all data if you have a hard drive failure. It’s quite easy to create a backup in Virtualbox.
