Yes it is possible to add new item type. This is how you do it; Log in to you Koha (staff client) Go to Koha Administration. Under Koha Administration, Basic Parameters, go to Item Types. You will see a button labeled New Item Type click on it . Then you will see Add Item Type. Type in the code for your item type e.g. BK for Book/Books and the description for your item type e.g Books or JL if your tem type is Journal.
