Removal of rss.pl
Dear users, we are considering the removal of rss.pl fr the 3.18 release. We'd like to hear from those who still rely on that feature (on older versions), to see if its functionality can be covered with another approach. The code as-is will be removed, but could be reintroduced if someone wanted to work on getting it up to date. I have found out we do have a library system that makes use of rss.pl Kyle http://www.kylehall.info ByWater Solutions ( http://bywatersolutions.com ) Meadville Public Library ( http://www.meadvillelibrary.org ) Crawford County Federated Library System ( http://www.ccfls.org ) Mill Run Technology Solutions ( http://millruntech.com ) On Tue, Jul 8, 2014 at 9:57 AM, Tomas Cohen Arazi <tomascohen@gmail.com> wrote:

Hi Kyle, thanks for your answer! Could you comment on what feature of rss.pl are they using to find if we could improve it or solve it with other Koha tools? Regards To+ On Tue, Jul 8, 2014 at 1:55 PM, Kyle Hall <kyle.m.hall@gmail.com> wrote:

Tomas, They use it to feed a URL of recently checked in items to a screen to display what has been checked in recently. Nicole

Would this affect the ability to use rss to subscribe to searches? That is a feature that is well-used, but might be able to be replaced by the ability to use email. (E.g., in Innovative catalogs, one can save a search and then receive an email message when new material matching the search is added to the catalog.) One nice thing about rss, though, is that it doesn't require logging in with an account--it's completely anonymous--one just copies the feed! Of course, if this doesn't affect users' ability to use rss to subscribe to searches, then, nevermind!:) Cheerio! heather ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Heather Hernandez Technical Services Librarian San Francisco Maritime National Historical Park Research Center heather_hernandez@nps.gov 415-561-7032 (voice) 415-556-3540 (fax) http://www.nps.gov/safr/historyculture/museum-collections.htm "The sailor does not pray for wind, he learns to sail."--Gustaf Lindborg

It doesn't affect subscribing to searches. The rss.pl that Tomas is talking about is for letting the library build custom RSS fields based on an SQL query. Galen is correct. We wouldn't remove such a sensitive functionality (RSS feeds). My question relates to a specific tool that not much people might be using. On Tue, Jul 8, 2014 at 5:49 PM, Hernandez, Heather < heather_hernandez@nps.gov> wrote:

Well, clearly I didn't know what it really did, so can be counted among the ones not using it!:) Best, heather ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Heather Hernandez Technical Services Librarian San Francisco Maritime National Historical Park Research Center heather_hernandez@nps.gov 415-561-7032 (voice) 415-556-3540 (fax) http://www.nps.gov/safr/historyculture/museum-collections.htm "The sailor does not pray for wind, he learns to sail."--Gustaf Lindborg
As I've said before, we use it quite prolifically with our customers; however I'm sure we will work around it should it disappear. We've never had the time to update it to TT and hadn't really found the inclination either to be honest. I'll try and get one of our trainers/configuration guys to comment as it's them that have always set it up for customers.. but as said, we can always work around it if no-one else is currently actively using it (and certainly no-one is actively maintaining it), and I'd vote for it's removal too to help clean up the code base so we can see the wood for the trees.
