An LC cataloging record that I need puts the call number into the "090" tag which raises the following questions: 1. Would the cataloging gods be offended if I put the call number into the "050" tag? 2. If I preserve the integrity of LC cataloging, would I have to manually insert the call number into the bib record? 3. When I import the record from the Z39.50 search, the "090" tag doesn't appear; how would I insert it into the koha record? 1. The cataloging gods won't be offended. BUT, if your call number is in the 050 you should check the indicators to make sure they reflect whether or not the item is in the Library of Congress and whether they assigned the classification number. You'll find a good number of records with the number in the 050 _ 4 (second indicator "4" indicating that LC didn't assign number). The issue for Koha users is that Koha sucks the 050 into the 952 $o but doesn't pull from the 090. 2. You don't have to preserve the integrity of LC cataloging if you can make an improvement on it. At least, I don't. It isn't a sacred text, after all. But you can manually insert the number into the Koha bib record if you want to. 3. I don't know why the 090 wouldn't appear. I pull records from OCLC rather than a Z93.50, and the 090 fields appear. We have our call number also in the 090. Our class scheme is Dewey (yes that doesn't match, it's been that way forever) When we finally figure out how to migrate the item data with the bib data will ALL our call number records have the wrong information as it does not pull from the 090? __________________________ Cecil Hillyard Washoe County Library Technical Services tel.: 775-827-1885 fax: 775-827-5484 From: koha-bounces@lists.katipo.co.nz [mailto:koha-bounces@lists.katipo.co.nz] On Behalf Of Kurt Bodling Sent: Tuesday, January 25, 2011 10:16 AM To: Paula Corman; koha@lists.katipo.co.nz Subject: Re: [Koha] Call number issue <snip> The issue for Koha users is that Koha sucks the 050 into the 952 $o but doesn't pull from the 090. <snip> Kurt Technical Services Librarian George Washington's Mount Vernon Estate and Garden From: koha-bounces@lists.katipo.co.nz [mailto:koha-bounces@lists.katipo.co.nz] On Behalf Of Paula Corman Sent: Tuesday, January 25, 2011 12:50 PM To: koha@lists.katipo.co.nz Subject: [Koha] Call number issue An LC cataloging record that I need puts the call number into the "090" tag which raises the following questions: 1. The Cataloguing Gods or St. Minutia? They *are* different entities, and
honestly, we need to have a fine understanding in order to honour the proper
classification. How else to pay homage, after all?

(In seriousness, this would constitute a textbook response IMHO, so I
wholeheartedly concur.)

Shhhh, we're so close to that institution a whisper will carry across
the water ;) But back to serious business, cataloguing rules are meant to be
tailored locally, which is a line most prefer not to walk. It doesn't make it
wrong, it makes you smart. :)
