Does anyone out there use the acquisitions function of KOHA? I've been calling libraries in the U.S. that use KOHA and so far they all tell me that they don't use the acquisitions. Several have told me, "they've heard it leaves a lot to be desired," but can't give me a specific reason why. Any feedback? Thanks, Leslie G. _________________________________________________________________ Store, manage and share up to 5GB with Windows Live SkyDrive. http://skydrive.live.com/welcome.aspx?provision=1?ocid=TXT_TAGLM_WL_skydrive...
Hello Leslie We use the Acquisitions function and are very happy with its functionality. Different libraries in different parts of the world acquire their books by different means. Koha Acqusitions is designed and well organised for a library where orders are placed several months in advance of publication. Koha Acquisitions takes splendid care of the budget over a number of different item lines. We always know, throughout the year, pretty exactly how much we have spent, how much we have committed and how much budget remains in each of the budget lines. Acquisitions has some very sophisticated programming that takes care of the recommended retail price (which we use as the replacement price), various and variable discounts from different suppliers, variable exchange rates, postage and transport costs, local taxes and still comes out with the right price that we actually pay for each item. And it adjusts the budget accordingly. This functionality is extremely important to us, and it works well. Please, American librarians, don't badmouth something you don't know and use. We are using acquisitions and generally it works fine. Except couple things: 1. There is still a bug and I can not run a list of items received. There is an amount in a summary but not titles. I wonder if others are getting that list... 2. When the item is on order, you actually do not see that in OPAC. Our patrons only see the bib record without item attached. So you do not know if the title is on order or it is some kind of a error record without an item... 3. Receiving of multiple copies is time consuming as well. For example, we had 150 copies to receive and all of them had to be entered manually. If you have done it with 10, you should know how it feels to enter 150 barcodes, shelving places, etc.! I am not mentioning any nice things that Koha has... If you are looking for a free soft, it is still worth getting it! Jolanta, Per #1 -- do you mean this bug? http://bugs.koha.org/cgi-bin/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=2703 ? Per #2 -- this is an enhancement I have heard is in the works (http://wiki.koha.org/doku.php?id=en:development:rfcs3.2:create-item-when-ord...). Right now, libraries using Acq are adding an item to their recieved items and marking it as 'on order' Per #3 -- I completely agree --- Nicole C.
