document manager or digital library
Hello i'm new at Koha and if anyone could help me i appreciate. I've installed Koha 2.2 and one of the features that i am most interested is the possibility to function as a document manager or digital library. I just don't see how can i do that. I still didn't figure how can i insert for instance a "pdf" document into the database. Can anyone give a clue for i can start studying this feature because i'm a little "lost" at this moment. Thank you very much. Hi Pedro, There is no feature in Koha to upload a pdf directly. But the beauty of open source is that you can bend Koha to your will. Here at Katipo we have done this for our clients by hooking up our CMS to Koha and bending the URL field. Note these are non MARC setups. Here is an example in action http://library.lgnz.co.nz/cgi-bin/koha/opac-detail.pl?bib=3527 The librarian uploads the PDF through a custom interface in the CMS. This gets the PDF on to the website. Then they are taken through to Koha to catalogue the item. We find it works quite well. Whilst full searching of the PDF may be desirable, most of the time we have found that it it is better to catalogue the PDF so that you can have more control over how it appears in search results. So Koha was perfect for this. We find it works well as a library of digital resources less good as a document manager (but that is more due to our CMS than Koha:-) If you are looking for good digital library software (as opposed to our idea for a library of digital resources) check out Greenstone - www.greenstone.org/ Cheers Russel Pedro Maia wrote:
