MARC import in Koha GUI
Dear all, I need to batch edit existing various 952 subtags, but *not* 952p Barcode (which would corrupt circulation I presume). I am not a Linux techie, and want to use the Tools feature, "MARC Import (managing batches)" but have been unsuccessful thus far. We use a matching rule that matches against Koha biblio, 999c (my previous question to the newsgroup). I've tried a variety of settings on the import, but always receive, "Number of items ignored because of duplicate barcode : 25" FYI, on this occasion I'm trying to batch edit 952c Shelving location, to changed items from one shelf to another. Thanks for comments, Nelson implementing a union catalogue in Cape Town, South Africa
We ran into a similar issue recently & learned some bad news: There's no way to do a batch edit of 952 subtags by importing on top of a record with an existing 952 field -- Koha will simply add an *additional* 952 (i.e., another item). My next thought was to clear out our entire database, edit our records as needed, & then re-populate the catalog. But even this is apparently not as easy as it sounds. There's no way to do a batch edit of 952 subtags
Thanks, Cab. Maybe I could set up a matching rule against 952p (Barcode), if only documentation existed to explain the Record Matching Rule settings. There's plenty of settings options, eg. Normalization rule, so it ought to work ... in theory. I constantly come up short on documentation. After six months of countless hours with Koha, every little step forces me back to this newsgroup, attempting to re-invent the wheel. Maybe this is what should be expected from FOSS/open source, my experience is limited in this area. However, the community life around Koha is inspiring and encouraging, and keeps me coming back. Plus the price is right, and the potential for an OPAC ILS union catalogue in my neck of the woods is compelling. I wish techies would realize how incredibly helpful documentation is for those who try to make sense of their invaluable work, and in the case of Koha I don't just mean comments in the code, I'm referring more to the manuals. -- View this message in context: http://www.nabble.com/MARC-import-in-Koha-GUI-tp24125181p24132587.html Sent from the Koha - Discuss mailing list archive at Nabble.com.

Hi Nelson
You have of course read the manual eh? I found this http://koha.org/documentation/manual/3.0/administration/catalog-administrati... There is tons more info in here http://koha.org/documentation/manual/3.0 If you have already read it and found it comes up short, then feel free to point out the missing sections and I'm sure Nicole (who is a librarian as well as a techie) The documentation manager would be happy to fix that. If not, then ... :-) Chris
The documentation for Koha has improved immensely over the past few months. Nicole does a great job, that frankly, I wouldn't want to tackle. I have also found that even with the best documented software, there's still a need for a newsgroup. On Sun, Jun 21, 2009 at 4:48 AM, Nelson Fredsell<nelson@cfce.org.za> wrote:

Dear Garry and Chris, Thank you both for taking the time to reply. I have learned to 1) check the koha.org manual, 2) search previous postings to the newsgroup, and 3) search koha.org and liblime.com for additional juicy bits of information on my specific issues. *Then* I post to the newsgroup. I wish that the manual (new and improved!) would be more of a wiki. Maybe there's plans for this already, as processes do seem to improve all the time. Having said this, Yes I did read the manual before posting, and No it did not provide enough details about the Record Matching Rules. For example, In my earlier posting the answer was "Nelson, you should use index 'Local-Number'." Do you know how many hours it took to elicit that one index term!? So, then I experimented with Record Matching on 999c and it worked great! (I learned more about MarcEdit in the process, too.) That is, until I needed to batch change a local Koha tag (952c). So now it's back to the newsgroup, collective hours of time, for another tiny piece of information. There's got to be a more efficient way of moving forward. Please know that I am very grateful to the few who provide the rest of us with answers to our burning questions. Koha is great fun (much of the time), and I can't wait for our little project to go live. -- View this message in context: http://www.nabble.com/MARC-import-in-Koha-GUI-tp24125181p24138759.html Sent from the Koha - Discuss mailing list archive at Nabble.com.

The best way, is when you discover the answers to your questions, write them up on the wiki (wiki.koha.org) Add to the faq there, or start a new page. The more you write up, the less others will have to ask the same questions. If you write it up, then email the list with a link to your write up, and email nicole and she may be able to add it to the manual for you. Chris
Agreed. The first patch in for was because I came across a bug, a small annoyance, and I thought to myself, "Someone should fix that." Then a light bulb clicked. It's open source. I can fix that. If you document your experiences, please share the documentation with the community. Garry On Jun 21, 2009 6:18pm, Chris Cormack <chris@bigballofwax.co.nz> wrote:

Hello all, I must admit that this page is not one that I wrote - I had a developer write it because I was confused about how it all worked. That said, if any of you (other developers/users) want to help me out I'll gladly fix the page to have it make more sense. As for FAQs on the wiki - do you all think that I should put them in the FAQs in the documentation?? http://koha.org/documentation/faq If so - maybe you can try to add one and see if you have the rights to do that - if not I'll add them and change the owner to whomever is the best person to keep the question up to date. --- Nicole C.
