Koha pluging for linking fields and RDA -76X-78X fields
Hi eveyone! We are a specialized library in Argentina, Buenos Aires and we are right now updating to the last Koha version and at the same time implementing RDA with MARC21 fields. Where can we download the following plugin for linking records? mar21_linking_records.pl And who is actually implementing RDA in full? using relationships fields 76x-78x? Thanks a lot! -- Mg. Hi, Mercedes! We are also a specialized library! I'm sorry that I don't have an answer for you about the plugin, but we have used RDA from almost the beginning of its introduction, and I've cataloged for decades using the 76X-78X fields (they predate RDA)--do you have specific questions about them? I have a public list of RDA records on our OPAC that might be of interest: Contents of RDA records › SF Maritime NHP Research Center catalog (bywatersolutions.com)<https://keys.bywatersolutions.com/cgi-bin/koha/opac-shelves.pl?op=view&shelfnumber=52&sortfield=title> And there are also some sample records on the Koha Wiki: Training resources - Koha Wiki (koha-community.org)<https://wiki.koha-community.org/wiki/Training_resources#Cataloging> We just discussed using the MARC21 78X linking entry fields at the last Koha-US Cataloging Special Interest Group (on June 2, 2022) which might be of interest, and the recording is posted on the Koha-US YouTube channel: koha-US - YouTube<https://www.youtube.com/c/kohaUS/videos> (The Koha-US Cataloging SIG meetings are open to all, by the way, if you'd like to come to ask questions, get feedback, suggestions, etc.--you don't have to be a Koha-US member, or even in the US! Hi Heather! Thanks for answering and for the information. The plugin is marc21_linking_section.pl. Katrin mentioned it to me today. It is already set in all subfields and you just need to choose it and then implement it. It worked! Perhaps with some limitations but it is ok. I tested it on the 22.05 I would like to know how are you linking recods with 76x-77x marc fields in Koha with 21.05 version. Yeah sure, I will watch that video as we will use 78x fields as well. -- Mg. Mercedes Portugal Biblioteca Cnl. Manuel José Olascoaga Instituto Geográfico Nacional http://www.ign.gob.ar Av. Hi, Mercedes! Great news about the plugin! Several of the records in the list of RDA records that I mentioned in my previous email have 78X linking fields (e.g., between hardcopy and online versions). The 78X fields have long been used between related serials/periodicals, also. In case you haven't seen them, there are excellent examples in the MARC Bibliographic Formats, MARC 21 Format for Bibliographic Data: Table of Contents (Network Development and MARC Standards Office, Library of Congress) (loc.gov)<https://www.loc.gov/marc/bibliographic/> Helpful as well is OCLC Bibliographic Formats and Standards (useful examples even for non-OCLC libraries, I think!), especially under "Special Cataloging Guidelines": Bibliographic Formats and Standards (oclc.org)<https://www.oclc.org/bibformats/en.html> How we link is putting the appropriate 78X field in the bibliographic record, with the record number of the target record in the $w field (we use OCLC numbers) that when selected/clicked/tapped, executes a search on the target record's 001 field (where the OCLC number is stored). Maybe I'm not understanding your question or explaining it well? Do please let me know! Hi, I realized from this thread and the email exchange with Mercedes, that the value builder for linking records is not very well known. I started to file a bug, only to realize I had done it before already, suggesting that we add the plugin to the default frameworks. I really think it would make it more visible/discoverable: *Bug 29733* <https://bugs.koha-community.org/bugzilla3/show_bug.cgi?id=29733> - MARC21: Link 7xx linking fields to marc21_linking_section.pl value builder in sample frameworks What do you think? Hi Heather, yeah, I get what you are saying about the linking records using the field 001 wich stands for OCLC control number. We just use koha record number. I noticed that you are not using $i subfield for the relationship designator-RDA Appendix J. Which subfield are you using ? Alsso I dont see this designator in your examples. By the way. do you know what is supposed to be exactly subfield $4 relationship. We just checked that in Spain they are using it as a code for the relationship, but there are no codes in RDA....it is confused Mercedes Portugal De: "Heather H Hernandez" <Heather_Hernandez@nps.gov> Para: "Mercedes Portugal" <mportugal@ign.gob.ar> CC: "koha" <koha@lists.katipo.co.nz> Enviados: Martes, 14 de Junio 2022 13:25:28 Asunto: Re: [Koha] Koha pluging for linking fields and RDA -76X-78X fields Hi, Mercedes! Hi Mercedes, For the relator codes in $4 there is a list in the MARC documentation (https://www.loc.gov/marc/relators/). And there is also subfield $e for relator term (https://www.loc.gov/marc/bibliographic/bdx00.html). But someone else might be able to explain better about cataloguing practice. :) Hope this helps, Katrin On 16.06.22 21:50, Mercedes Portugal wrote:

Hello! Apologies for my late reply--we had a family emergency, but all is now well! IMO, the relator codes in $4 are efficient but not as human-friendly as the terms in $e--some libraries use both. (We use only $e terms in new cataloging.) I like the relator terms--Koha displays them well. And Koha links well to whatever number you use in the 001. You're right--we're not using the work-relationship-designators (in RDA Appendix J) because we find the relationships supplied by the indicators in the 78X linking entry fields sufficient--typing in the relationship designators is, well, extra typing. ::grin:: There are relator codes listed on the MARC21 page under "Relators" at MARC Code List for Relators (Network Development and MARC Standards Office, Library of Congress) (loc.gov)<https://www.loc.gov/marc/relators/> (I'm sorry, but I don't know where non-English ones may be.) Since they're MARC21 codes, they're not listed in the RDA Toolkit. And, yes--it can get confusing about what's where! And, Katrin, about Bug 29733, using a linker in Koha similar to the authority linker is an intriguing idea, but it is not what other ILS's and bibliographic utilities do as far as I know (which is limited!)--at the moment, we are able to import our records into Koha from OCLC without change, and the 78X linking works immediately, because Koha linking uses the exact same data in 78X linking entry fields as OCLC. Having to wait, e.g., for a script to one to add something like a $9 field to achieve the linking would not be ideal for us. Also, authority records change constantly--references are added and/or deleted, language and terminology changes, people die and death date is added, etc., etc., etc., so the headings used in the bibliographic records need to change as well, and there are many headings in each bibliographic record, so having Koha create the linkage via a script is worth waiting for the script to run. The linking in 78X linking entry fields must necessarily be thought about by the cataloger(s), and systems with advanced functionality create it automatically (e.g., in OCLC one simply puts the record number into the appropriate MARC field and runs a macro and the rest of the field is populated from the source bib record--I have yet to see if such a macro can work in Koha, but want to!). The relationships have to be thought about by the cataloger, and aren't usually that many, so are easily put in by the cataloger, so at least in my opinion, having Koha create yet another linkage via script is added & not really necessary. But this is only my opinion, based on a very particular workflow--it may serve the vast majority of the Koha community! And a syspref to turn it on or off is always possible.
