Re: [Koha] Live DVD (Was: Master-password (katikoan) and Live-DVD
Dear Friends, We can leave unhealthy arguments on Live DVD. We can submit the Official Live DVD to users, its their freedom to use for what purpose. They have freedom to accept or reject it. I strongly believe that, Live DVD can provide an opportunity to try Koha for newbies. Please forgive me if my words hurt anyone. I finished Koha 3.12 Live DVD making. I have still doubt where I host this to make available to Koha users. Nobody from developing team given an answer. Regards, -- Vimal Kumar V. Great to see such fast turn-around on the LiveDVD! Cheers to that! :) I have seen you repeatedly raise the question about the hosting the ISO. Now, I'm not a mind-reader, but i can probably guess what may be the possible reason for it. A LiveDVD goes stale the day it is released. And I do not mean just Koha, the *entire* s/w stack placed on the LiveDVD which unless you have the necessary bandwidth to do an 'apt-get upgrade. Within a few days of release, you will be missing out on security patches, fixes, updates and upgrades. Overtime, the software becomes vulnerable to serious security holes and other issues that get detected. The LiveDVD is stricty a test-run use-case, unfortunately not all the people coming in are not aware of that, and when it does not work as they expect, it can do more harm than good. As a training / self-learning tool it is excellent, however attempts to use it in production mode or even for pilot trials opens it up to people requesting for community support, fixes, patches and upgrade paths, all thanks to the "Official" label. With all that baggage to bear, the label of "Official Koha LiveCD/DVD" brings in serious issues about Koha's project governance and quality. Just my guess! cheers -- Indranil Das Gupta Phone : +91-98300-20971 Blog : http://indradg.randomink.org/blog IRC : indradg on irc://irc.freenode.net Twitter : indradg -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-==-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Please exchange editable Office documents only in ODF Format. Vimal, I apologize if I gave the impression that I disapprove of your work. That was not my intention. I hope it came out in the discussion that neither myself nor others (as far as I can see) object to a Live DVD as a great means for certain purposes. Reasons for and against the use of Live DVDs in production have been brought up. Maybe it would make sense to put them in the Wiki for reference. In the end of course everyone is free to do whatever they like. -- Mirko
