Re: [Koha] Barcodes (with name of library)
Thank you Marie-Luce! I did what you said, both ways but KOHA does not like it. It outputs a PDF that is 0 kb. If I remove the branchcode and change it to "only the barcode is printed' it generates the labels without issue. I also put the branch name in 'xxxx', barcode but it does not like that either. I am not sure what I am doing wrong. Thank you, Bill Kingsley On Wed, Nov 13, 2024 at 11:15 AM Marie-Luce Laflamme < marie-luce.laflamme@inlibro.com> wrote:
Hi Bill, You can create a new card layout (Cataloguing > Label creator > New : Layout), set the layout type = "Bibliographic data precedes barcode" and add "homebranch" to the data fields. If your library name is different from your system (Administration > Libraries > Library name), add free text between single quotes to the data fields (e.g. 'Centrale Library' ). You will then only need to select this layout when printing your labels.

Hi Bill, Are you using the "barcode range" option or printing labels from existing items? If you are printing barcode ranges, I don't think you can put anything else on the labels with Koha right now (see bug https://bugs.koha-community.org/bugzilla3/show_bug.cgi?id=12316). If you use any layout with bibliographic data and the items don't exist yet, it will return an error or an empty file. There is no good workaround that I know of for that other than using a stamp like Heather says in her comment or having the library name preprinted on the barcode. If you want, you can do it the other way around: create your items first, and then print the barcode labels. I sent this to another library that was in a similar situation. It might work for you. I know nothing about the company, but I haven’t been bombarded with their advertising. While you’re waiting for the Koha update that has the barcode range bug fixed, I have a possible workaround. See https://www.boxhero-app.com/en If you click on “Free Barcoding” you’ll be taken to a screen that lets you download a spreadsheet template, enter the information you want to add, then upload the template. They say it’s free and available to non-subscribers—I ran a couple of examples and it worked well. I can send you the template I designed and the output. The file needs to be in Excel format, but OpenOffice will let you save it as such. The first column is the name of my library, the second and third columns are the barcodes. In this test case I put the year I printed it, then enough zeroes for 99,999 barcodes. If you anticipate more books than that, add zeroes. DO NOT start your barcodes with zeroes. (I haven’t done that myself, but I’ve heard horror stories from people who have used them—the leading zeroes get cut off in a lot of applications.) I don’t know what labels you’re using, but the site has a lot of Avery-style label formats, so you can probably find one that works for you. I used Code 39, which most (?) barcode scanners can read. There’s no check digit, but you can get along without one. Maybe this will help? --Fred Fred King, MSLS, AHIP Medical Librarian, MedStar Washington Hospital Center fred.king@medstar.net 202-877-6670 ORCID 0000-0001-5266-0279 MedStar Authors Catalog: http://medstarauthors.org Cigarettes are like squirrels. It's easier even than that. You can make barcodes with just a special font, of which there are a number freely available, and a mail merge. *Joel Coehoorn* Director of Information Technology *York University* Office: 402-363-5603 | jcoehoorn@york.edu | york.edu On Thu, Nov 14, 2024 at 2:06 PM RACS IT Department <itdept@racsonline.org> wrote:
