Is it necessary to clean staged MARC records -- Assistant Librarian, Confucius Institute Scholar 13-14, R.D. National College, Bandra (W.)
My experience is that if the MARC fields are structurally accurate, it’s a good idea but not necessary. For example, as long as a 650 field has something that Koha recognizes as possibly having something to do with a subject heading, it will import. Also, if the record lacks mandatory fields such as the 942, it will import but if you try to edit the record, you’ll need to put in the itype before you can save it. However, if the structure of the record is faulty, importing will stop. Then you have to figure where the faulty record is, correct it, and try to import again. When I was importing an especially annoying batch of MARC records I had to break them down into groups—I think it was 100 records per group—then upload them, find the group with the problem record, divide the group in half, upload that half, etc., narrowing things down until I found the problem. I haven’t had that problem recently, and later versions of Koha may point out where the faulty record is (I hope so!). Koha is a small but interesting part of my job, and even after ten years of being a sysadmin I still only learn things when I need to. When I've imported from one system something that is sort of unique to Koha, is the field used for the item records. Koha uses 952 many other systems use 942 or 852. If you want items to appear on the records you need to move the item info to 952. The 952 field has to have the correct codes for library, item type, and any other authorized values used for item records that you set up in Koha or the records will not import like Fred said.. Koha also likes records to have a leader (LDR or 000) and 008 fields. If these are missing, it messes with your search results. I added a record in Koha with a generic leader and then copyed it and added the field to all my records in MarcEdit and do the same with the 008. Another common thing to clean is the indicators especially for 245. Depending on what your records look like or if you want to 'skip' any leading articles - a, an, the, you need to use the correct indicators. Hi, I think you mean the "Clean" button in the list of import batches? When you clean an import it will leave the batch, but remove the information about your imported records from the database. Once a batch has been cleaned, you can no longer undo an import, so you should only do so when this action is no longer required. Cleaning imports can help to keep your database a bit smaller, as storing a lot of MARC records in the import tables can take up space. Hi! Do you mean that you want to clean all the batches? I don't think there is a way to do it from the staff interface. However, the cleanup_database script has an option to remove imported batches (see https://koha-community.org/manual/latest/en/html/cron_jobs.html#cron-clean-u... with the option --import). When you clean an import it will leave the batch, but remove the information about your imported records from the database. Once a batch has been cleaned, you can no longer undo an import, so you should only do so when this action is no longer required.
Cleaning imports can help to keep your database a bit smaller, as storing a lot of MARC records in the import tables can take up space.

When I've imported from one system something that is sort of unique to Koha, is the field used for the item records. Koha uses 952 many other systems use 942 or 852. If you want items to appear on the records you need to move the item info to 952. The 952 field has to have the correct codes for library, item type, and any other authorized values used for item records that you set up in Koha or the records will not import like Fred said..
Koha also likes records to have a leader (LDR or 000) and 008 fields. If these are missing, it messes with your search results. I added a record in Koha with a generic leader and then copyed it and added the field to all my records in MarcEdit and do the same with the 008.
Another common thing to clean is the indicators especially for 245. Depending on what your records look like or if you want to 'skip' any leading articles - a, an, the, you need to use the correct indicators.
