This may not be your problem, but I generally type "free -m" to make sure it isn't a memory problem. We tried to run koha with only 512MB. It's very cramped with such a small amount of memory available. There were inexplicable failures.

i have 4 Kohas running OK on a 512meg system Tom, your errors are probably caused by glitchy bib records, rather than zebra/memory issues
