Hi everybody, Kohacon 2014 will take place in Córdoba, Argentina! Congratulations! We have a clear vote of roughly 3:1. There are some duplicate votes on both sides which I will consider software or server errors :P and I will have a look at the unfinished votes later. I had one person saying they could not finish the vote, later telling me that it worked eventually. I cannot present final numbers at this point but the result is clear. I'd like to thank both Córdoba and Ibadan very much for offering to be hosts for our conference! -- Mirko
Congratulations to Córdoba, Argentina! @Mirko. Just wondering. Are the duplicate votes you are talking about based on IP or email? Thanks for volunteering your time to setup and manage the surveys. Hello Mirko, I guess you may be busy or missed my previous mail. So I am asking again. We would like to know how you identify duplicate voting. The reason we do want to know is because in Nigeria, most people, including institutions and organizations, use "natted" IP addressing for Internet access. So all librarians in a typical library, using different computers, would have the same have IP to the world. If you are using IP address to identify duplicate voting, that does not seem fair to several voters. You may have used email or other means, but it would be nice to have the records set straight. We would also like to know the actual number of voters, as this may serve to help us know whether a regional conference may be viable for us sometime in the future if the interest is high. Once again, thanks for volunteering to help move the community forward and best wishes to Cordoba, Argentina as they prepare to host us in 2014. Regards. Salvete! I would assume strong enough interest to warrant a regional conference in Nigeria. Africa had a strong presence in India. It would be nice if an African Conference were not timed on top of the International Conference, and I'd counsel whoever is organising it to watch out for other big Conferences like IFLA or your local association's national conference. Cheers, Brooke

Thanks for your comments and advice. And yes, we will also be well represented in Reno! Hi Olugbenga, please excuse the late reply, I'm very busy at the moment and Koha is unfortunately only a very small part of my life right now. I am of course aware of what you are describing. To clear that up, what I would consider sure duplicate votes is the same email address. There have been a few cases which can easily be explained with a bad internet connection, a server hickup or things like that. It were only a few cases and I count that as a single vote. What I would consider "suspicious" are the same or similar names in different email addresses, especially if it they voted within minutes. It happened in a small number of cases on both sides. I am not very familiar with names from both countries so I won't judge these cases. I think they cancel each other out in number and are not relevant in the whole picture. I would consider that "noise". IP addresses would have mattered in a case like hundreds of votes appearing out of nowhere or something like that. I did not expect anything like this to happen and it did not. They could have also helped if there would have been a lot of "suspicious" cases. If that would have been the case, I would have asked for another pair of eyes or two to decide what to do. The number of complete votes was about 400 (~300:100). There are maybe another 100 not completed. Most of them are empty, meaning somebody had a look at the survey but did not take it or decided to do it later. That number is not surprising, given that it was anounced at least on two mailing lists and in the community newsletter. There are some that have an email address but only one or no location selected. Those include people testing it when the question came up in the beginning whether you can vote for only one location. There has only been one report of the survey not working at some point, that might show up too. I will have a look at it to see if there may have been more technical problems that just did not get reported, but anyway it does not interfere with the results. I hope that clears things up and makes sense, please feel free to ask if not. I will be out of town for a long weekend and will probably not get to have a final look at the survey (or followup questions) before next tuesday or wednesday, I'm very sorry for the delay. -- Mirko Olugbenga Adara schrieb am 09.10.2013

Yay - congratulations Argentina. When we made the Koha back in the day, we watched the downloads start as the sun tracked around the globe; from memory I believe Argentina was the first country outside of NZ to get Koha up and running :) (I'm sure Chris will correct me if I'm wrong ;) ) Well done. Chris & Paul, Thanks for the encouragement. We also look forward to hosting the community in the future. Brooke, I wont be in able to make Reno again for some personal reasons. :-( But my Managing Consultant(CEO), Tunji and his lovely wife Bolanle (who incidentally is a professional librarian) will be there to represent Projektlink / Nigeria. I am sure they will be interested in talking with you and other members of this wonderful community. I think there may be 1 or 2 other Nigerians also in Reno. Yes, I still remember the Australia incidence, and met Bob and Irma last year in Edinburgh. Nice couple. I always share that story in my Koha training sessions as an example of how awesome the Koha community is! Hopefully, by God's grace, I should be in Cordoba 2014.
