Variety of questions about Koha installation
There are a few things about my Koha installation that I could use some help with. I welcome you to take a crack at any or all of these questions. I am running Koha 3.0001005 on Debian. 1. When I log in to Koha (from the staff interface), why are other libraries listed in the drop down box? Is it possible to get rid of them? I tried deleting them in Admin/basic parameters/libraries and groups, but they won't go away. This may relate to my next question... 2. In the circulation module, I see that for my library patron Betty Smith, there is another person listed as Betty's guarantee. The guarantor, John Jones, is a patron of another unaffiliated library (in fact, a patron of one of those libraries I am trying to delete!) This affiliation has no basis in reality. How can I sever this relationship? 3. Is there a way to limit the number of holdings (issues of a serial) that appear for a journal record? An automatic way to tell Koha that only the last 6 entries should be listed? 4. My database support/IT staff member says that he thinks it easier to back up Koha by backing up the entire virtual machine, rather than running mysqldump. What do you think of this? 5. Last but not least - can anyone tell me if it is possible to clear the import reservoir? Please let me know if you need more information. Thanks! Amy C. While you installed Koha via the Webinterface you chose to install "sample libraries and patrons." Thats why. You can get rid of them one by one by the admin interface. Question 2 is answered by solution 1. When you catalogue a journal, I think, you can tell which issues are available. Backup at least the MARC by a cron. Try using bulkimport instead. Me too, I experienced some problems by the web interface. Kind regards, Stefan Amy Schuler schrieb:

Stefan, Thanks for your response. However, the problem is that I have tried deleting the sample libraries and patrons in the admin interface (libraries and groups). I delete one, it says "library deleted", but then the library is still listed! And it still appears in the login drop down box, etc. and its patrons are still linked to my patrons. So, they are not actually being deleted. I have also tried deleting all of the information from each of the library profiles first, but that does not delete the libraries either. Any more advice? Thanks! Hi Amy and Chris, Chris's advice about reinstalling without the sample libraries was what finally worked for us last week on 3..6. Now I see froma post by Owen about Cynthia's "How to mark as missing?" question that there might be something similar there. When we add a book, everything works fine, but we can't put it on hold -- it's marked as "Lost or missing." But the record itself says "available". How can I really check AND CHANGE a particular book's record? Where does Koha say the record is "Lost or missing?" On the screen where you place the hold? -- Owen -- Web Developer Athens County Public Libraries http://www.myacpl.org

-- Owen **** It says it in the OPAC view when I log in (perhaps I should log in as a non-admin user?). I have uploaded a screenshot here: http://intknowledge.com/sites/default/files/u8/missing-cannotHoldItem.png
You might be able to see it yourself: http://koha3.intknowledge.com/cgi-bin/koha/opac-reserve.pl?biblionumber=1 Strangely, from an outsider's view, it says both that the item cannot be put on hold and also that it is not on hold. Nevertheless, I was not permitted to place the hold. I made a patron-user without admin rights and that user got the same message, so _somewhere_ there is a hold on that item. Thanks for asking, David

Admin rights don't affect users of the OPAC. One is either a valid logged-in patron or not. Logged-in "superlibrarian" patrons, for instance, don't gain any additional privileges in the OPAC. It sounds to me like something in your setup is limiting the number of holds possible. I'm not sure about your version.... Do you have a "maxreserves" setting in system preferences? Do you have a "holds allowed" option under Administration -> Circulation and fines rules? -- Owen -- Web Developer Athens County Public Libraries http://www.myacpl.org

I had trouble with one of the libraries in the sample data. There was a lingering acquisition request hanging out in the data. Make sure that ALL items and patrons are deleted or else you cannot delete the library. Martin On Tue, Mar 9, 2010 at 1:25 PM, Chris Nighswonger < cnighswonger@foundations.edu> wrote:
