Dear all, Though I am not quite keen to migrate from my stable Koha version 3.2 running on Ubuntu 10.10, what are the best step-by-step instructions to migrate to the current Koha version to run on Ubuntu 10.10 and using 32-bit machine. I would not like to be left too behind. Thanks in advance. Raphael On 8/30/12, Vikas Salunkhe <salunkhe.v@gmail.com> wrote:

Greetings, Raphael, Before you do anything: backup. It shouldn't be necessary, but one needs to be careful. The upgrade process is generally documented in the INSTALL files near the bottom. However, since version 3.2, a major development has come into existence: packages. This will make future upgrades even smoother. Ubuntu is a Debian-based OS, and so the use of the packages should not be a problem. I have installed using this method on Ubuntu a couple times using a fresh install. If you are going to stick with the tarball method of installation, read http://wiki.koha-community.org/wiki/Koha_on_Ubuntu#Upgrade_Instructions I haven't tried these upgrade instructions, but they are similar to the ones found in the install files. If you are going to consider switching to packages on the same server, read http://wiki.koha-community.org/wiki/Moving_an_installation_from_a_regular_in... However, you will notice it has "Initially, this is a draft based on running through the process once, feel free to correct, elaborate and improve." I haven't tried these instructions. If you are able to do a fresh install of packages, read http://wiki.koha-community.org/wiki/Koha_3.8_on_Debian_Squeeze I have tried these instructions. If you have problems, the friendly folks on the IRC channel and here on the mailing list will be able to help get you over any bumps you may encounter. Lastly, Ubuntu 12.04 LTS works better than Ubuntu 10.10 for installing the newer supported versions of Koha. In general, a LTS version is the recommend OS version of preference. Also, Ubuntu 10.10 has reached its "end of life date" (https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Releases). And like I said previously, before you do anything: backup. :) GPML, Mark Tompsett
Dear Mark Thanks for the response. I have taken note of the suggestions you have put forward. I have been used to using Koha 3.2 LiveCD which can install very easily on a 32bit machine. Now when | check the net I can only see this Koha Livecd_325_ubuntu_1010.x64.r8.iso. Can this be a good alternative and which platform is it best suited? I would very much prefer an offline installation because of our slow speed communication lines. Kind regards. Raphael On 8/31/12, Mark Tompsett <mtompset@hotmail.com> wrote:

Greetings, Though LiveCD's are handy and useful for your situation, I have no experience with them. Also: http://wiki.koha-community.org/wiki/Koha_LiveCD The 3.2.5 version you found is probably the first entry. However, the next two entries are newer supported versions. Version 3.2.5 is no longer supported, and Version 3.10.0 comes out in November. You may likely need to install the LiveCD (if you use one of the two bottom links), because there are significant upgrades after 3.2.x. Running from the LiveCD may not be possible, because of these upgrades. However, I still personally would recommend a packages install of Koha 3.8.4 on Ubuntu 12.04 LTS. If you have difficulty upgrading, the mailing list is here to help. Additionally, the size of a LiveCD is about the same size as an Ubuntu download: http://www.ubuntu.com/download/server (choose 32-bit) Download it and burn the ISO. And though the installation of Koha packages will require will more downloads now, future upgrades will not require downloading LiveCD's any more, but something that is 10 times smaller. Hopefully this is enough to convince you of the benefit of packages, given your slow internet connectivity. And please, before you do anything that could lose data, back up your data to an external source. I hope I don't sound too repetitive. :) GPML, Mark Tompsett

It is my understanding that this script does not need to be run this if you are upgrading from version 3.4 or higher. --- BEGIN SNIP FROM INSTALL FILE --- Koha 3.4.x or later no longer stores items in biblio records so if you are upgrading from an older version as part of the upgrade you will need to do the following two steps, they can take a long time (several hours) to complete for large databases misc/maintenance/remove_items_from_biblioitems.pl --run misc/migration_tools/rebuild_zebra.pl -b -r --- END SNIP FROM INSTALL FILE ---
error - Use of uninitialized value in pattern match (m//) at /usr/share/koha/lib/C4/Biblio.pm line 2926.
That's probably why you got this message, and you may have missed reading the paragraph above these two commands.
2) misc/migration_tools/rebuild_zebra.pl -b -r error - 19:29:23-30/08 zebraidx(2359) [warn] Unknown register type:
As Mason James already replied, this is just a warning. It should be fine. GPML, Mark Tompsett
