lang="x-western"><pre wrap="">Hi Max,
This workstation/server would perform all the e-Library backups. We have a service called 'AIME' that each night backs up to a particular hard drive/partition on that machine as well as performing database maintenance, keyword builds etc. Then the user performs a 'removable backup' during the day. Usually by burning it on a rewritable CD.
Of course, routines can be setup to copy the backed up data off this library machine onto the school server for secondary backups. But we recommend to most of our users that even though this is occurring, it would be a good idea if they were burning CDs so that they are in control of their own backups. (As unfortunately on a few occasions we have come across sites where the librarian has been told the school server is backing up everything to tape. But when a time came where they wanted to restore some old data they discovered it had never been backing up. So having the librarian in control of their own backups removes this issue).
With usernames etc, you usually don't have to duplicate these on the library server when having it as a member server. You can then have all your library workstations use your network authentication from your school server to logon.
So, in essence, you control all network/computer usernames and passwords from the school server still.
All e-Library usernames and passwords are backed up when the e-Library database is backed up.
Regarding MARC, yes, we are fully MARC compliant. You can both import and export in MARC format.
And yes, our user list is always growing.
Finally, regarding user group support, we actually try to encourage users to work through us rather than attempting to support themselves. As often we are able to respond faster to their queries than another user could and provide the correct information right away, rather than someone else's 'personal opinion'
That said, there are still Functional Solutions user groups held. We say that if a user wants a user group, they just talk to us about it first and we attend, at no charge, to go through their queries and walk them through procedures. We also hold central training sessions twice a year for all users to attend and meet with us.
I've attached the contact details of some of our Western Australia users for you to talk to them.
Also, I've attached exactly how much one of these 'library servers' should cost and all the support that our users receive.
Let me know if any other questions come up.
Thanks,
- Ashley Johns, Functional Solutions Help Desk

Subject: Re: Does FILMS run on MYSQL?
Thanks Ashley
So backups would have to be added to this workstation as well.
Do you have some way of syncronising our LDAP data on the servers with
the data on the workstation (usernames and details) or will there have
to be duplication of entries?
Now to the program itself.
Is it fully MARC compliant?
Can we export the MARC data to make it available to others?
Do you have a growing list of users?
Lastly Support.
Do you have a user group/support forum that we can look at to ask
questions or browse to see how prompt your support is?
Regards
Max
